GENDER: Male
APPEARANCE: Eridan is a young troll, gray skinned and yellow eyed like the rest of his race. Unlike the majority of his race, however, he has fin-like gills on the sides of his face, as he is of the sub-race of sea-dwelling trolls. His hair is short and spikes upwards, and while the majority of it is the black common among trolls, a large chunk in front is purple. Rising up from his head he has two horns in shades of orange, with a wave bent into them about two thirds of the way up. He always wears thick-rimmed black glasses, a black, long-sleeved shirt with his symbol (♒) on it in purple, black and blue stripped pants, purple and blue sneakers, and a scarf stripped in two shades of blue. Most of the time he also wears a purple cape with a high collar.
PERSONALITY & HOUSE REQUESTS: When speaking of a troll, one must always be aware of their place on the hemospectrum, and to do that, first a small discussion of the hemospectrum itself is in order. Every troll is born with a certain blood color, ranging from a dark red to a deep purple. A troll's blood color determines both their place in society and their temperament. The higher you are on the hemospectrum, effectively the higher your social standing. On the down side, those higher on the hemospectrum also tend to be more volatile.
That said, Eridan has the second highest blood color on the hemospectrum, making him basically troll royalty. He lets this go to his head, considering himself of an elite level and therefore better than almost everybody. He has no problem saying this, most often to Feferi, a troll with the absolute highest blood color, in an attempt to get her to act more as a proper highblood should.
He takes the hemospectrum to an extreme that other trolls don't, however. Where most highblooded trolls have a desire to rule those with lowblood, Eridan actively plots a genocide against the landdwelling lower blooded trolls. It is a grandiose plan, which he actively works toward. He uses his time playing Fatal Live Action Role PLaying (FLARP) games to amass the means to do this. All of his plans include the creation of an ultimate doom machine which would wipe out the landdwelling sub-race.
Unfortunately, like many things about Eridan, there are built-in contradictions to these plans. The first and more minor is that he doesn't, in fact, want to kill all the landdwellers. He tells one of his friends, Kanaya, that she is an exception, as it would be "unconscionable." As he has a number of other friends among the landdwelling trolls, it's likely they, too, would be exempt from his genocidal plot. The second, and much more undermining, contradiction is that his weapons of ultimate destruction are designed and created by his landdwelling friends, Vriska and Equius. As trolls are a highly self-preservative race living with natural homicidal tendencies, Eridan puts a glitch in his own plans by having them built by people he would, theoretically, be killing with it.
In the end, his is a false egomania, an idealistic view of what a troll of his blood color should be that Eridan has taken to heart. So while his interest in genocide is real enough, the grandiose plans for actually putting it into practice are part of a larger picture. Eridan loves military history, as well as legendary conquerors. These are his role models, and he actively tries to make himself as much like them as possible. It has led to all sorts of dramatics and theatrics in his manner of dress and speech, as well, but is most obvious in the way he acts. This is his ideal, the him he wants to be, and the front he puts on most of the time.
His over-the-top persona has in some ways actually become him. He spends most of his conversations with others being a jerk, swearing and belittling others almost casually. It has become almost a thing he does more than a thing he means, because for all his dramatics and high-reaching ideals of bloodshed, all of that is the part of Eridan that he's built as a sort of shell. It's his default, sure, but it isn't his full personality. as he tends to backtrack on it when it's pointed out to him that yes, indeed others do have thoughts and feelings that don't match his own. His better-than-thou attitude is, basically, strictly from a hierarchical perspective. Eridan himself actually isn't a person with especially high self-esteem. While he's more than willing to insult someone, he is quick to turn around and apologize when it's pointed out that he's acting like a douchebag. He'll actually beat himself up to the person he's apologizing to, easily switching to pointing out his own flaws. He never actually makes the attempt to learn from it, however, preferring to apologize rather than actually control his behavior.
But it is still to be said that he does love the theatrics of it all. Eridan is extremely self-involved and self-centered, and loves to make any situation all about himself. He creates drama for himself, both with others and inside his own head. He isn't self-confident, however, and for all his bluster, most of the time he assumes negative things about others' actions toward him. If he goes without a reply, people are ignoring him. If people are ignoring him, they must have moved on, and doesn't he just deserve it, they have so many better things to do than talk to him. If they don't want to talk to him, seriously what is their problem, just talk to him already. Sure, if they disagree with him, they're obviously stupid, but if their feelings are hurt, he can't understand how they even put up with him.
It's no wonder than Eridan has issues getting along with others. He isn't any good at expressing his feelings in any case, but the problem is that he isn't any good at hiding them, either, and it makes him difficult for others to deal with. He ends up putting himself on the outside, always wishing to be on the inside. He can't relate to others, needing things to be spelled out for him before he'll understand what a person is really thinking, rather than the elaborate make-believe he's set up in his head.
This extends, quite naturally, into his attempts at romance. Troll romance is complicated, involving four different types of relationships that all need to be filled auspiciously. There are lines of hate and pity, as well as a difference in function romantically or socially. It's a confusing thing, especially for young trolls. Eridan, however, has more trouble with it than most trolls. The two quadrants he did have filled both failed, in various levels of misery. He was in pity with his platonic soulmate, Feferi, who he was accidentally draining, the relationship much more one-sided, on her part, than it's ever meant to be. His rivalry with Vriska fell apart as he tried to hold on to the relationship as she developed other interests. In the end, both of his relationships end up as more friendship than romance.
While Eridan isn't the type to throw himself indiscriminately at everyone all the time, when he gets feelings that are even a bit romantic for someone, he will start attempting to flirt with them. He's overly sensitive to other people's comments romantically, as well, and tends to see comments that were meant innocently as an attempt on their part to flirts with him. He tends to try to make his attempts at flirtation subtle, when the interest is on his own part. Another troll, Karkat, didn't even realize Eridan's attempts to flirt with him at the time, only realizing it many hours later when his future self spoke with past Eridan. When it's a case of apparent interest on the other person's part, Eridan is much more likely to broach the subject, put himself forward as willing to attempt a quadrant with them. Like any troll, he just wants to find his destined partners.
Eridan is an extremely jealous person. He would love to monopolize people, having all their attention. He tends to attempt this with gifts, most especially when it comes to Feferi, but also to Jade in the form of his ultimate rifle, and arguably even to Vriska, in their FLARP partnership and the spoils it gained them. It's hard for him to accept when a troll has others they hate or pity more than him, and it can easily send him into a rage.
Eridan's interest in romance doesn't only apply to his own romances, however. He avidly follows romcoms, and discusses romantic movies with Karkat frequently. He also tends to gossip about romances amongst their friends with Kanaya. He's always willing to impart a piece of romantic advice if he's able, but more frequently he seeks it. Taking the advice he seeks, however, is a different story, as he isn't someone who follows advice easily.
Eridan likes to do things his own way. When that comes to feelings, he sometimes has a hard time actually approaching the issues. With his low self-esteem, his feelings are easily hurt, despite the fact that he tells himself he enjoys the drama of it. He tries to keep his real feelings as secret as possible from the object of them, especially when it comes to pity. The more real and deep his feelings are, the less likely he is to actively pursue them, making flirting with those he doesn't hold a serious pity or hatred for much easier than the real thing, in many ways.
Off of the subject of romance, Eridan tends to do whatever he wants despite other's objections. His quest for landdweller genocide is one such example. Kanaya and Feferi are both opposed, but he's set on it regardless. In SGRUB, Eridan single-mindedly pursues the genocide of the angels of his world, LOWAA. The other trolls are against it, as it makes the angels homicidal against them, but it becomes his mission, in game, and almost the only thing he does the entire time. He'll lie to them about continuing it, however, because while he's made himself alone in LOWAA, he really wants for people to visit him. When he made the decision that their only hope was to join Jack Noir to save themselves, no one else's opinion mattered to him, to disastrous ends. He just has trouble giving up on a course of action, once he's begun it.
Eridan is a lonely person, the sort with an empty ache to fill, but he doesn't know how to fill it. He tries romance, and a blustering facade, but fails at more general friendship. Life is hard, and no one understands.
That said, Eridan has other interests as well. He likes stories about magic, despite it being fake and only science is real, and wizards, although they are only FAKE FRIENDS. He believes in destiny, like Jade getting his rifle from someone from the future before he gave it to her, and that all trolls have a link to one of their ancestors than effects who they are.
Despite the hopelessness of his own situation, SGRUB dubbed him the Prince of Hope, after all. The titles are both a description of the bearer, and a role that challenges them. Eridan is ever hopeful, never giving up on things, even when it would be better for him to do so. He tends to go ceaselessly after whatever course seems best to him.
With his tendency to plot, his interest in drama and intrigue, his self-involvement, unwillingness to give up on his own way, and his volatile highblood, Eridan would be well suited to Slytherin, but his interest in military history would make Ravenclaw a possible placement, as well.
COMMUTER DETAILS: Tapped, but as yet I'm undecided if/when he'd actually switch. He could go either way, but I think it'd be good, having the option open.
POSITION: Student.
ABILITIES & POWERS: Trolls are nocturnal, so Eridan has the ability to see in the dark. Highblood trolls like Eridan tend to have very long lifespans, living for centuries. As a sea-dwelling troll specifically, he can breathe both underwater and on land. Speaking of that sub-race, he has an instinctual ability to swim, but little in the way of actual experience so doing. He does, however, have lots of experience riding on his guardian lusus, a Skyhorse - a creature that looks much like a seahorse, but has the ability to fly.
Eridan knows how to sail ships, a skill he put to use in his extreme role playing. As for said extreme role playing, FLARP was very handy for finding treasure, hunting other trolls' lusii, and winning all the levels, all very important skills. He is also good at planning and plotting, to great effect in FLARP, but less effectively in real life.
In the SGRUB game, Eridan put his knowledge of rifles, another skill he gained and improved through FLARP, to good use killing all the angels. Or perhaps bad use, but at least important use. In the end, it was good practice, at least. He is very good with a rifle.
Through various shenanigans in the veil post-SGRUB, Eridan got a wand of white science. It shoots blasting rays of white science. It isn't magic. Really.
Also to be noted, in troll culture the light/dark dichotomy is switched from that of human culture. Therefore, a wand of whitemagicscience would actually be the equivalent of a wand of black magic to a human. As such, Eridan will probably have an affinity to the dark arts, magically speaking.Or perhaps, SCIENTIFICALLY speaking.
WAND: Eridan will have a custom wand. The core will be his white science wand. As white and light are to trolls as black and dark are to humans, it will give his wand a bend and certainly proficiency to the dark arts, if he should choose to pursue them actively. The wood will be pine, owing both to his tendency to be a loner, as well as highblood trolls' normally extended life spans. It's rather inflexible.
MISC.: Eridan types with a quirk.

THIRD PERSON:
He'd thought he was dead. He'd really, truly, with complete and utter certainty, thought he was dead. He remembered Vriska and Gamzee being there, all ready to face off in a nefarious but ultimate probably futile battle that would rival any kismessitude, when Kanaya had showed up, out of nowhere.
That was the biggest fucking surprise, he thought, because he was pretty sure she would be dead right now, and not white and sparkly. He remembered, among many things that were hard to think about and therefore best put out of mind, blowing a hole through her with his science wand. It had even looked like she still had the hole, bound with what, either ironically or because it really was, seemed like one of his capes. He remembered only being able to stand in shock as she took care of Gamzee and Vriska, and turned on him.
Maybe it was god damn hilarious to someone somewhere, or somewhen, because he clearly remembered her debunking his science wand, as if science could be DEBUNKED when it was the real thing and not fake like some things, but he was pretty sure, completely sure, that after that she had killed him.
So how in hell was he in a room, on a bouncy, springy platform, with a letter in hand telling him he was in a wizardry school, of all things, and that he'd been recruited into being a student here. It was awful, and wrong, and obviously a lie, and no matter how many times he told himself to wake up, he was still here.
What he wouldn't do to wake up in Gamzee's stupid fucking pile of stupid fucking horns at the moment.
